The Mecom Team had invested much energy in preparation for the Daytona 24 Hour race. As a result #2 Grand Sport Coupe wasn't really as well prepared as it should have been to endure the rigors of 12 hours of racing on the bumpy Sebring circuit.

The #2 Coupe had a rough start to the event -- a mechanical failure prevented Foyt from setting a qualifying time, leaving Foyt/Cannon to start from sixty-second on the grid of sixty-six cars! Foyt was optimistic, however; "With all this horsepower I really think I can outrun the Cobras with the lightweight Corvette."

Foyt put in one of the greatest first lap performances in Sebring history. He passed fifty cars in the first lap! He went on to engage in an epic battle with Ken Miles' 427 Cobra prototype that lasted until the Cobra's brakes gave up.

The Foyt/Cannon pairing ran in the top ten for nine hours, sitting as high as 8th, before retiring when worn splines resulted in a lost wheel. In accordance with the rules, Cannon fitted a spare and returned to the pits for proper repairs to be effected. As Cannon was accelerating back to rejoin the race, a member of the Cobra team (who was rushing across pit lane in response to an accident) ran across his path and the two collided! Amazingly, neither suffered serious injury and the Grand Sport got back into the race, but the delays cost the #2 car more places than could possibly be made up, dropping the Mecom entry to twenty-seventh. In the end Foyt and Cannon made up four places to finish in twenty-third overall and second in class behind the Grand Sport of Penske/Hall.
